BetterSquash.Com
Test Site

This is the BetterSquash.com test site. It's the place where I refine the design and layout for the new version of the site.

Hello, as you just read in the introduction, this is not the real BetterSquash website. It's the place where I am converting the current Wordpress-powered website into a static HTML site. All of the October, September, August and July links on the archives page work, and I am updating the previous articles everyday.

Once all the special pages and the May-onwards articles have been converted, I will be switching over to this design and system. There should be very few issues with links, but even after hard work and careful planning, errors might have occured.

If you prefer this layout...

Feel free to use it for daily updates via the articles page, but I won't be displaying which older pages/articles I have updated.

From a users point of view, besides the visual difference, the biggest changes are the loss of categories, i.e. standard of player each article is suitable for, and content keywords. Based on my research into usage of the current site, those features were rarely used anyway and over-complicate the design. Most people visit the site either daily, to see the new article, or come from a google search.

For those interested, this site and once it's ready, the BetterSquash site will be hosted on GitPages and the site is just simple static HTML code, with a little javascript: google tracking and the translate feature.

I have chosen to spend many hours going back to static HTML because I feel long term it will actually be less work. I spent nearly 15 years running a Wordpress website, and while the plugin system allowed some great features, every time there was a major upgrade, I had to adjust the PHP code or fix the javascript. That coupled with some themes breaking and the general hassle of comment moderation, database updates etc etc, I decided that I wanted less work.

I've decide to remove the traditional home page that displays lots of information and simply replace it with the current article. That means it will get updated daily once BetterSquash.com is running the static HTML site.

So there you have it. If you visited Phillipmarlowe.com and were surprised to see this, now you know why. I hope that before the end of the year, the backdating of the articles will be finished and Phillipmarlowe.com will be repurposed - don't know what yet, maybe just an archive of the article titles.
